Differences between SUS 316 and SUS 316L

  • 316L has 0.03 max carbon and is good for welding whereas 316 has a mid range level of carbon
  • 316L and 316 are austenitic alloys, meaning that these stainless steel products gain corrosion resistance from use of a non-magnetic solid solution of ferric carbide or carbon in iron in the manufacturing process)

Applications:

  • Food preparation equipment especially in chloride environments
  • Laboratory benches and equipment
  • Coastal architectural panelling, railings and trim
  • Boat fittings
  • Chemical containers, including for transport
  • Heat exchangers
  • Woven or welded screens for mining, quarrying and water filtration
  • Threaded fasteners
  • Springs
